If you’ve ever wondered what custom embroidery actually involves — or whether it’s right for you — you’re not alone. Whether you’re looking for a personalised gift, a meaningful keepsake, or something completely unique for your wardrobe, custom embroidery offers a level of individuality that simply can’t be replicated by mass production.
In this guide, I’ll explain what custom embroidery is, how the process works, what you can have embroidered, and what to consider before placing an order.

What is custom embroidery?
At its simplest, custom embroidery is the process of stitching a design onto fabric that is created specifically for you.
Unlike ready-made embroidered pieces, custom embroidery gives you complete creative freedom. The design, colours, size, and placement are all chosen with you in mind.
When it comes to custom embroidery, the world really is your oyster. You want a pair of dungarees with sunflowers, bees, and your birth flower? You got it. You want an apron with a BBQ and a grasshopper on top with your initials? You got it (and I have actually done that one).
One of my favourite examples was a customer who sent me her skirt and asked for a hummingbird embroidered in thread colours that matched the fabric exactly, so the two pieces looked like a coordinated set. That’s the beauty of personalised embroidery — it’s tailored entirely to you.

How does custom embroidery work?
The exact process can vary depending on the embroiderer, but here’s how my custom embroidery process works in the UK:
- You fill in the enquiry form on my website (full details are outlined on my custom orders page).
- We discuss your idea — this can include inspiration photos, colour preferences, sizing, and placement.
- If needed, I sketch the design for you to approve before stitching begins.
- You choose the thread colours and the approximate size of the embroidery.
- I begin stitching your piece by hand.
Customers can either choose an item from my shop (such as a t-shirt or hoop) or send their own clothing for embroidery. I allow around two weeks for custom embroidery orders, although I always confirm timelines during the enquiry stage.
Because each piece is made to order, the process is collaborative and personal from start to finish.

What can be custom embroidered?
Custom embroidery is incredibly versatile. Some of the most popular items I embroider include:
- t-shirts
- embroidery hoops (decor pieces)
- denim jeans
- denim jackets
- crop tops
- personalised gifts
I’ve also completed many repair projects, embroidering over holes or marks on much-loved clothing. This approach aligns with the principles of slow fashion — extending the life of garments rather than replacing them.
From names and initials to florals, wildlife, meaningful symbols, or completely original ideas, almost any design can be translated into thread.

Why choose hand embroidery over machine embroidery?
Hand embroidery and machine embroidery are fundamentally different processes.
Machine embroidery is often used for bulk orders, logos, and large-scale production. It allows businesses to produce identical designs quickly and efficiently.
Hand embroidery, on the other hand, is a slower and more thoughtful process. Each stitch is placed individually. This means:
- No two pieces are ever exactly the same
- Designs feel more organic and detailed
- The finished embroidery has subtle texture and dimension.
According to textile experts, hand embroidery is considered a heritage craft, valued for its artistry and individuality rather than speed or replication. It is often chosen for bespoke, heirloom, or meaningful pieces rather than wholesale production.
If someone chooses hand embroidery, it’s usually because they value craftsmanship and uniqueness over uniformity.

How much does custom embroidery cost?
The cost of custom embroidery depends on several factors:
- The base item being embroidered
- The size of the design
- The complexity and level of detail
- The number of thread colours
- The fabric type (some materials require backing or stabilisers for durability).
As a rough guide, my embroidered t-shirts start at £25, and 3-inch embroidery hoops start at £20. Larger or more detailed pieces may cost more depending on the time involved.
Because hand embroidery is time-intensive, pricing reflects the hours of skilled work that go into each piece.

How long does custom embroidery take?
Processing times vary depending on design complexity and current workload. I usually allow around two weeks for custom embroidery orders, but this can shift slightly during busier periods.
If you need something for a specific date (such as a birthday or Mother’s Day gift), it’s always best to enquire as early as possible.
Is custom embroidery worth it?
If you’re looking for something truly personal, the answer is yes.
Custom embroidery allows you to create:
- Personalised embroidery gifts
- Meaningful keepsakes
- One-of-a-kind clothing
- Sentimental decor pieces
Unlike printed designs, embroidery is stitched directly into the fabric, making it long-lasting and resistant to fading. With proper care, embroidered clothing can last for many years (I’ve written a full care guide on this separately).
For many people, the value lies not just in the finished piece, but in the story behind it.

Things to consider before ordering custom embroidery
Before placing an order, here are a few helpful things to think about:
- Do you have a clear design idea, or would you like creative guidance?
- What size and placement would you prefer?
- Do you need an exact colour match?
- Is the item suitable for embroidery (fabric thickness matters)?
I’m often asked whether colours can be matched exactly — in almost all cases, yes. Occasionally, sourcing a very specific shade may slightly increase the cost, but I always discuss this beforehand.
You can also send your own clothing for embroidery if you’d like to personalise something you already own.
Final thoughts
Custom embroidery is about freedom, creativity, and individuality. Whether you’re designing a sentimental gift, repairing a favourite garment, or creating something completely original, it allows you to turn an idea into something tangible and lasting.
