Being a photography student I feel like I have an upper hand when it comes to photoshoots & editing for Instagram, especially for us smaller accounts who don’t or can’t hire people. I personally believe that having an instagram theme is what is going to get you places, especially if you are a smaller account. Your entire feed is what people see first when they click on your profile, so you want that to stand out and look good.
An Instagram theme may sound silly to any ordinary person, but as a photography student, it actually makes a lot of sense. The way in which you sequence photographs can make or break a project. The editing also has to be similar, otherwise they look like several different photographers mushed into one.
Inspiration
Before going on a photoshoot, it’s always a good idea to have some inspiration. Just a few ideas to get the ball rolling is perfect, anymore and your photoshoot may become a let down if you cannot achieve the desired photographs. I always turn to Pinterest for this, in fact I have a whole board dedicated to Instagram Inspiration photographs which you can follow here.
Going on a Shoot
when it comes to actually going on a shoot, a lot of preparation is required, especially if it is for Instagram. You don’t want your feed to look like the same photograph taken from a million different angles, so you need to switch up your photographs and outfits.
To keep this super short, you are going to need to bring a backpack with a lot of bits and bobs! First thing you’re going to want is a camera, obviously a DSLR works best, but if you have an iPhone they’re good too. You also want to bring a change of outfits, this could even just be a top (depending on where you shoot, changing shouldn’t be too difficult).
Finally you just want to bring some different props, for example if its summer you could bring; a hat, drink, book, sunglasses, bag, etc. When it comes to taking the photographs, use what you have around you. If you’re in nature and there are flowers, pick one (as long as its a common wild flower, just be careful) and pose with it. Or if you’re in a city you could pose looking into a shop window. There are plenty of possibilities.
Editing
You don’t necessarily need anything fancy, editing wise. I use to just edit my photos on the Instagram app itself (Sometimes I still do!). I never use the filters, but through the advanced editing features on Instagram, you can kind of create your own.
For example the “colour” option is my favourite, I simply select the light blue and adjust the harshness to fit the photograph. This ensures that all your photographs have a similar editing style and colour tone, and will look good on your feed.
